If Landscape is the shape of the land, then the suburbs are our landscape. Most paintings of the suburbs are lavish displays of cynicism, and I wanted to avoid that shady lane. Pleasantness with an edge, but I can find no edge. Which is probably why so many people live there. You can't be a suburban cynic, because Diogenes used to sit half naked outside the senate and heckle the legislators. That would not be countenanced in Cherry Hill New Jersey where these paintings are based from. Of course, They could be anywhere. Everybody who sees them identifies them as being somewhere around their neighborhood.
